Everything Computes

چکیده
The emergence of complexity in our universe is caused by generative processes that confound us. Collective behaviours going under names such as evolution, swarming, embryogenesis, thought, and emergence produce results that seem counterintuitive (or downright impossible) when the individual elements in the collective are examined. In this seminar I explore the causes of complex behaviour in general and suggest a new viewpoint based on a combination of systemics and computation. I suggest that all behaviour in the universe can be viewed as a form of computation – a systemic computation – which is in many respects faster and more efficient than the classical views of computation we use in traditional computer designs. By viewing behaviour, and specifically biological systems, as types of highly parallel, nested computations, we can begin to understand how complex forms and functions emerge. With this knowledge we might one day be able to exploit the computation of natural systems and use it for our own purposes.

In secure multiparty computation (SMC), a group of users jointly and securely computes a mathematical function on their private inputs, such that the privacy of their private inputs will be preserved. One of the widely used applications of SMC is the secure multiparty summation which securely computes the summation value of the users’ private inputs. In this paper, we consider a secure multipar...

In Daoism, 'Sheng Ren' or 'Perfect Man' is assigned to a person who acts in accordance with Dao and nature. A sage person is wholly in harmony with Dao and therefore, the most significant description of him is manifested as 'Wu-wei' or 'non-action'. Dao is the being which natural and spontaneous process of all the things is depended to it. Therefore, no one should put obstacles in the way of Da...
متن کاملIs It Time to Say Farewell to the ISDS System?; Comment on “The Trans-Pacific Partnership: Is It Everything We Feared for Health?”
Investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) continues to plague health-oriented government regulation. This is particularly reflected in recent challenges to tobacco control measures through bilateral investment agreements. There are numerous reform proposals circulating within the public health community. However, I suggest that perhaps it is time for the community to explore a stronger position ...
متن کاملAssessing the Health Impact of Trade: A Call for an Expanded Research Agenda; Comment on “The Trans-Pacific Partnership: Is It Everything We Feared for Health?”
Labonté et al provide an insightful analysis of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and its impact on a selection of important health determinants. Their work confirms concerns raised by previous analyses of leaked drafts and offers governments serious and timely reasons to carefully consider provisions of the agreement prior to moving forward with ratification. It also contributes more general...
متن کاملCurrent Models of Investor State Dispute Settlement Are Bad for Health: The European Union Could Offer an Alternative; Comment on “The Trans-Pacific Partnership: Is It Everything We Feared for Health?”
In this commentary, we endorse concerns about the health impact of the trans-pacific partnership (TPP), paying particular attention to its mechanisms for investor state dispute settlement. We then describe the different, judgeled approach being advocated by the European Commission team negotiating the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, arguing that, while not perfect, it offers si...
